Why Should You Volunteer?

We’re seeking passionate volunteers for the Gear Up Against Kids Cancer Bike Ride on Saturday, May 3, 2025!

This annual event brings our community together to support the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute, driving forward vital research that improves the lives of kids battling cancer.

Volunteers are the backbone of this event, and every role—from setup and cheering on riders to assisting at water stations—makes a tremendous difference.

Job NameDuties
Registration/Check-InHelp riders check in, Call out bib numbers to shirt pullers, and provide information about the event.
Packet DistributionHand out rider packets based on their assigned bib number.
Rest StopsSet up and manage water and snack stations along the route, offer drinks and food to riders, and provide encouragement. You will need to check in at the start/finish area to be assigned your rest stop location.
Volunteer Check-inCheck in volunteers and give them their assigned task and/or location
First AidHelp provide basic first aid (ex: minor bumps/scrapes) to participants.
SAG (Support and Gear)Transportation: If a rider cannot continue due to fatigue, injury, or mechanical failure, SAG vehicles can transport them and their bike to the finish line or designated rest stop. Route Monitoring: Monitor the course to ensure the safety of riders, providing support for those who need assistance or may have fallen behind by transporting participants to rest stop or start/finish.
Route MarshalsStand at key points along the course to direct riders, ensure they stay on the correct route, and monitor safety.
Finish Line and Celebration VolunteersAssist in setting up the finish line, cheer on riders as they finish, hand out medals or awards, and help with post-event cleanup.
Set-Up and Tear-DownAssist in setting up signage, tents, banners, bike racks, and other equipment before the event and help take down and clean up afterward.
Parking AttendantsDirect cars to parking areas, assist in managing traffic flow, and ensure safe movement in and out of the parking lots.
Route SetupThe day before the event, assist Greehey CCRI staff in placing wayfinding signage along the routes.
HAM Radio Communications TeamProvide route communications regarding rider safety or other event related issues.
